State of the Union (Ad)Dress: Perfectly Plum
Mrs. O looked perfect in plum this evening at the State of the Union address. She wore Isaac Mizrahi. Purple is one of her better colors, don't you think? The President referenced two of Mrs. O's initiatives during the address: the fight against childhood obesity and a new program with Mrs. B to support military families.

#17. Not Fabulous: The Children of Incarcerated Parents
Today, the folks on Where We Live, an NPR show, dedicated the entirety of the episode to the children of incarcerated parents. According to the 2007 Sentencing Project report,
1. In 2007, 1.7 million minor children had a parent in prison, an 82% increase since 1991.
2. One in 43 American children has a parent in prison, with particularly broad racial/ethnic variation.
3. One in 15 black children and 1 in 42 Latino children has a parent in prison, compared to 1 in 111 white children.
4. In 2007, there were 809,800 parents incarcerated in U.S. state and federal prisons, an increase of 79% since 1991.
5. In 2007, half (52%) of all incarcerated men and women were parents.
6. In 2004, 59% of parents in a state correctional facility and 45% of parents in a federal correctional facility reported never having had a personal visit from their child(ren).
7. Two-thirds of the incarcerated parent population is non-white.
8. From 1991 to 2007, the number of incarcerated mothers increased by 122%, compared to a rise of 76% for incarcerated fathers.
These are some scary statistics. We know that more citizens are currently incarcerated than ever before, but we don't tend to think about what happens to their children while they're serving time.

#446. Joey Syta's My Only Desire (2007-2009)
From Joey Syta: My Only Desire is a one third scale sculpture adaptation of a 15th century tapestry from The Lady and the Unicorn series made completely from Lite-Brite pegs, pegboards, and glue. Using only outdated materials acquired from online auctions, collecting, organizing, and affixing the pegs to complete the work was a two year endeavor. The pegs span four decades and multiple countries of origin which yield a much wider range of colors than the eight basic shades (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and white). The original tapestry hangs along with it's five counterparts at le Musée de Cluny in Paris which are popularly regarded as representing the five basic senses along with the sixth sense of love. Authenticity is one of my main concerns in the work's presentation and materiality. Ideally it is lit naturally as this was the same light source available when viewing the originals hundreds of years ago. I've also stayed away from engineering a perfectly proportioned solid pegboard or dying the pegs the exact necessary shades to flawlessly recreate the work. This faithfulness ultimately inspired an inimitable work with a parallelogram shape, allowing the boards to overlap and the diagonal peg alignment to stay intact, as well as a unique hyper-color infused spectrum. The work is roughly four and a half feet at it's tallest and five and a half feet at it's widest consisting of approximately 55,000 pegs affixed to 36 pegboards. Lite-Brite as a medium allows me to bridge nostalgia and the present while exploring themes that often involve synesthesia, youth, communication, and grief.
Very cool!

Brief hiatus...
I apologize for the brief hiatus I have taken from blogging. Last week I had a ton going on at school and this week I am stuck at home with the flu. I've been sleeping most of the time, but hopefully later in the week, I'll be back to blogging. I have so much to share!

#442. Blue Q's Mighty Michelle Shopper
Y'all know how much I looooveee Mrs. O. Well, last week, MWM and HKM told me they had a great surprise for me. When we met for dinner on Friday, they gave me the Mighty Michelle Shopper! You can only imagine how excited I was. This awesome, recycled tote features Mrs. O as "Mighty Michelle: First Lady of Fabulous." How appropriate! There's a tiny picture of Bo on each side which makes Eloise happy too!
I LOVE IT!
Thanks, guys!
